Let's talk health goals

Let's talk about why it can feel so damn hard to reach our health goals.

I want you to think about some health goals you’ve had over the years… maybe 5 years ago, 10 years ago, maybe you were just thinking about some last week.

Look back and ask yourself what happened over that time - Did you achieve those goals? What was your trajectory? Did whatever you were doing work? Did you feel good doing it? Were you technically getting results, but weren't really happy at the time? Or maybe you still feel like you just cannot get healthy, and that’s okay too.

Because here’s the thing, when we become so used to living our own day-to-day lives it becomes so routine that we’re not aware of all of the little factors that might be getting in the way of our health goals. They become blind spots to us because we’re just so accustomed to what we’re doing that nothing stands out to us. It all just kind of blurs together.

This is part of being HUMAN. It’s the reason people like therapists, coaches, and mentors exist. Sometimes all you need is an extra set of eyes to come in, take an overall audit of everything that’s going on, and see where the missing pieces of the puzzle are so that you can start making subtle shifts that are going to make a huge difference.

Let me give you an example: Let’s say you come to me and tell me that you really want to release weight, but you are so confused because you’re already doing all the “right things” but not seeing any results. You’re already eating healthy, nourishing foods, working out consistently… you’re doing allll the things, so what’s going on here?

There are obviously a bunch of reasons this could be happening, everyone’s situation is unique… and that’s where a health goal audit comes in. Because it’s nearly impossible to pinpoint exactly what’s holding you back from reaching your health goals without laying out all the data and getting a fresh perspective. Without this step, you’re basically playing a very annoying (and longgg) game of guess and check.

So instead of guessing, we get to use a health goal audit to map it all out. After a 2-3 hour deep dive into your daily habits and all of the factors at play in your life, we find out that you are consuming foods that society commonly deems as healthy but they’re not necessarily healthy for you. For many people, this might look like consuming foods that are advertised as “healthy” but actually have a bunch of unhealthy ingredients in them and/or are packed with hidden sodium and sugar.

Let’s say that in your specific situation, you tell me you’re already eating whole foods every day… you’re even having a kale salad every day for lunch. Buttt after taking a deeper look, we realize that your body actually doesn’t like kale at all - we discover that the kale salads you’ve been eating for lunch make you gassy and bloated regardless of the type of dressing or other toppings you add - you just weren’t thinking about the fact that kale was the common denominator. So, as a result, every day you’ve been eating this “superfood” that you think is leading you toward your health goals, but it’s really sabotaging your progress.

Why? Here’s the sciency part behind it. When your stomach is sensitive to kale (or any food), it triggers your body to go into an inflammatory, stressed state - leading to a physiological fight or flight response. And when that happens… your body literally holds on to the weight. (The science behind this gets super cool, reach out to me if you want to nerd out together). So unknowingly, you’re sabotaging yourself every single day, while thinking you’re doing everything in your power to get your health back on track. Ugh.

I know, that’s so frustrating to think about. But here’s the good news - whatever your unique situation is, you get to choose your approach moving forward. It doesn’t always have to look like this never-ending game of guess and check.

The first step is to ask yourself - What support and resources do I need to help me get to where I want to be? And how can I implement these into my life to achieve inevitable success?

Sometimes all you need is someone else to come in, take an overall audit of your current situation, and put their Nancy Drew hat on to see what’s in your blind spot.

I truly never thought I’d willingly use the word “audit” ever again after leaving the accounting world four years ago, but trust me when I say that a health goal audit is a lot more enjoyable and impactful than the financial audits I used to stare at in excel at for hours on end.

*Key takeaway: Reaching out for support does not make you weak. It makes you a strong, badass woman who values herself enough to invest in her personal growth. A woman who believes in her worthiness of living her most authentic, vibrant, energized, fulfilled life.

You got this.

Keep being awesome.
